This course is aimed at garden designers and students of garden design who wish to master the basics of 3D drawing, 2D plans, elevations and perspective drawings, using Google Sketch-up and its 2D counterpart, Layout. Sketch-up and Layout are now widely used across the garden design and architecture industries, and are highly rated for their usability and low cost in comparison to other professional standard CAD programmes. Sketch-up is an effective tool capable of producing polished visual presentations of every aspect of your project.

If you have yet to master the scary world of CAD drawing to produce your garden design drawings and are stuck as to which package is right for you, this course could provide the answer. Google Sketch-up (SU) can help you produce professional looking plans and 3D visuals for a fraction of the cost of other industry recognized CAD packages.

You will need to bring a design you are currently working on, which we will use as a vehicle to teach you the basics of Google SU. By the end of the course you should have a working plan and 3D model of your project to take away. Please note: To get the most out of the course we recommend you select a fairly simple design for a flat garden, ideally with a concept based on squares and angles, rather than curves.

After installing Google SU we will also give you components and add-ons not readily available to the general public. These are worth in excess of £300.

In order to use Google Layout (the 2D add-on to Google SU) you will need to purchase a copy of Google Sketch-up PRO. This is available to buy online direct from Google and currently retails at £550.

In this course we will look at installing and configuring the software, including the basics of components, styles, layers and units. We will teach you how to navigate the program and input the measurements from a site survey onto a working model. Once you have learned the nuts and bolts of the program we will start designing and explore how to use SU to create a scale model which we will transform into a scale plan using Layout. We will also look at how to produce construction drawings and make amendments and revisions to your plan. Finally, we will touch on importing and exporting files to scale so that they can be accessed by clients and contractors.

For: Buds and Blooms - garden design professionals or those who have already completed the How to Design your own Garden Course.

What you will need: Laptop (with mouse) with Google Sketch Up installed (if you do not have a laptop please let us know and we can make a computer available.) Please also bring details of a current or recent project, including scaled dimensions, site images and concept drawing. If possible please select a project based on a reasonably level garden with geometric footprint.

What you get: Components and worksheets worth over £300.Tea, Coffee and Lunch

What our past students say:

'At the risk of giving you an inflated head I think you are not just a fantastically creative garden designer and business woman but an excellent teacher to boot. I’m sure you must have some faults – perhaps you hide them well? Thanks very, very much again for your valuable help on the course.'

'Thanks to Katrina for a fabulous drawing course!! My drawings have become so much more professional in just two days. Also she gave us so many tips for how she runs her business – it was invaluable!! Thank you!!'
Angelique 2010

'Having just spent the most inspirational and informative 2 day drawing course workshop with Katrina and Matt, I just wanted to say the biggest thank you. I’m a qualified teacher and I have to say this short course has been the best thing I’ve been lucky enough to attend… Garden designers and students, it’s a must do… If there is one thing you invest time and energy into this year, it will be this! I have come home brimming with confidence, business ideas and knowledge / skills that would have taken months to gain from other course. Katrina put so much into two days teaching and I simply cannot believe what I’ve achieved. Thank you both soooooooooooooo much.'
